Planning ADU Electrical: Power, Sub Panels and Permits
An ADU needs its own safe power: a feeder from the main panel, a sub panel and circuits for each room. The first question is whether your existing service can carry the extra load. Crow Canyon Electric wires ADUs in San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, Livermore, Pleasanton and Fremont.
Where does the ADU’s power come from?
Usually from your existing service through a feeder to a sub panel in the unit. In some cases the unit gets its own meter, which depends on the utility and your plans.
Can my main panel carry it?
We calculate the combined load of the house and the ADU. If it is too high, a main panel upgrade comes first.
What circuits does an ADU need?
Kitchen appliance circuits, bathroom outlets, lighting, bedroom and living area outlets, heating and cooling, detectors, and sometimes an EV charger.
How do permits and inspections work?
ADU projects are permitted by your city or county, with inspections at rough-in and final. Requirements vary by address, so confirm them early.
Why plan it with your builder?
Electrical rough-in has to happen at the right stage of construction. Coordinating it with your builder avoids opening finished walls later.
