Do I Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade? Signs to Look For

Frequent tripped breakers, a full panel, visible rust or heat damage, and plans for an EV charger, ADU or heat pump all point to a panel upgrade. Crow Canyon Electric upgrades main and sub panels in San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, Livermore, Pleasanton and Fremont.

What does an electrical panel do?

The panel receives power from the utility and splits it into circuits, each protected by a breaker. If a circuit draws too much, the breaker trips to prevent overheating.

What are the signs of a panel problem?

Breakers that trip often or will not reset, no free slots, rust or scorch marks, buzzing sounds, lights that dim when appliances start, and a very old panel. Any sign of burning, a hot panel or a burning smell is an emergency: shut off what you can and call us.

When is an upgrade driven by a project?

Adding an EV charger, a heat pump, an ADU, solar, a hot tub or a kitchen remodel can exceed what an older panel supports.

Main panel or sub panel?

A main panel upgrade replaces the central panel and adds capacity. A sub panel adds breaker space near a garage, ADU or workshop. We calculate your load first and then recommend one.

What happens during the work?

The power is shut off while the panel is swapped, usually coordinated with the utility, and then tested and inspected. We tell you in advance how long to plan for.
