Installing a Home EV Charger: What the Electrical Work Involves
A Level 2 home EV charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a panel with enough spare capacity. The charger itself is the easy part. Crow Canyon Electric installs EV chargers in San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, Livermore, Pleasanton, Fremont and the East Bay.
What is a Level 2 charger?
A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, like an electric dryer or oven, and charges far faster than a standard household outlet. Most home chargers are wall-mounted units connected to a dedicated circuit.
Why does the panel matter?
The charger draws a steady load for hours. Your panel needs spare capacity and a free breaker slot for it. If the panel is full or near its limit, a sub panel or main panel upgrade solves it.
Where should the charger go?
Mount it where the cable reaches the charging port without stretching or lying on the floor. Garages are the common choice, but weatherproof units can go on an exterior wall or near a driveway. The photos on this site show both.
Do I need a permit?
A new 240-volt circuit is normally permitted and inspected by your city or county. We guide you through the steps for your address.
What should I ask before booking?
Ask whether the electrician checks your panel capacity first, what the route for the wiring will be, whether permits are included, and who sets up and tests the charger.
Quick answers
